ACMay 27, I was dead set on getting a Grom when they are available but before I do I am exploring other options that may be less expensive, I may enjoy even more, and are more practical for me. So my gears start turning and I start thinking about how much I love my stock CT90 and how versatile it is. The bike is very basic and low tech which I am all about. I know guys have been throwing Lifan and other "off brand" motors on these babies with really great results and they have seemingly been very reliable.
The most offroad I would be getting into with it would be fire trails and gravel roads as I have other bikes for dirt work. So here is my criteria with all of that in mind on what I would like out of my CT motor: mph comfortable for minutes at a time I am 5' 10" lbs. ATV and seem to be in between a and motor. I have been reading all over the internet for info but have not found a ton of information on the CT in particular or any other bike that people are riding on the street. The information I have found has been more of the "How to turn your CRF70 into a wheelie monster that will get you a bunch of dates for you Middle School dance.
Any advice and real world experience would be great to hear. Putting a Lifan engine into a CT is easy enough if you have some mechanical experience but would be a major undertaking for a non mechanic. The end result though is great and much less expensive than a new bike.
Lifan engines are very reliable, IMO more reliable than the 40 year old original Honda engines. They do have their quirks however so you'll want to choose the right one for the job. My only experience has been with the cc and cc horizontal engines and the cc vertical engine. The isn't a whole lot faster than the stock CT90 engine but it does have a lower first gear and climbs quite well off road without the need for a low range. Top speed is around 50 mph and it takes a while to get there.
Fuel mileage is generally over mpg. The engine has a lot of low end power and is well suited to off road. Much more power than the stock CT engines. It'll also climb any incline where it can get traction.
Riding with other CTs it gets mpg. Riding wide open mpg drops to about Many people report good results using the engine which is a "square engine" with bore diameter and stroke length being the same. There is also a cc engine that is supposed to have slightly more power than the So, the would meet all your requirements and I suspect the would also and maybe even the Please login or register.
News: Lifan Forum Is Live! Found some good info about Lifan and the cc engine. American Lifan and Lifan are not the same. American Lifan will not warrantly grey market Lifan's from China.
Cheaper bikes may claim to have Lifan engines but they don't because they cost more. It has a stroke of Some look almost the same but most of them are Jailing or Stannic short stroke engines, Maxattack Newbie Posts: 3. Yes, beware of grey market Lifans Thanks for the post. Good stuff to know. There are good dealers on both side of this equation. Generally if you feel comfortable working and performing modifications to your own bike then you can save a good deal of money buying online from a vendor such as Rabbit Scooter or Hooper Imports or many other import dealers out there.
If you do not feel comfortable doing your own work then you can pay a little more and buy from one of the many American Lifan dealers out there You may have one in your town and not even know it and they can provide service for your motorcycle.
Direct import motorcycles are the very same bike as what American Lifan sells they are just rebranded with the direct importers labels and in some cases there are little differences like horns and the type of tires installed on the bike.
I am about to write an article about this on my site. Thanks, Almon. Member Posts: All of this is somewhat true. The Lifan grays are NOT manufactured in the same plant with the same parts and workers as some would like you to believe.
They may work out just fine for You, but you do buy the grays at your own risk and should not bash American Lifan or their dealers for not wanting to service them. As others have said, you should be mechanically inclined, with tools and be frustrated as heck when parts for them are harder to get.
Mercedes Benz and BMW both went through this situation several years ago and when they found out it was not a real good idea for their reputation they stopped selling grays in the U. I would guess that Lifan China, being a relatively new business, will soon learn the same lesson.Buying Advice.

The Lifan engine thread
Thread starter Qckslvr Start date Aug 17, Qckslvr Forum Newbie. Joined Aug 17, Threads 1 Messages 5. I'm hoping someone out there can help me debug a VERY frustrating problem. I use this device infrequently, and was very pleased when it initially started after just a couple of pulls. After an hour or so I could hear the engine surging, and knew it was running low on gas. In order to avoid a potentially difficult re-start if I let it run out completely, I shut it down and re-filled the tank.
No go! Thinking the gas I had stored in the garage may have gone flat, I purchased new fuel, drained the tank, and re-filled it with the fresh gas. Still nothing! Since then, I have replaced the spark plug, even though the original was giving what looked like plenty of spark, removed, disassembled and cleaned the carburetor, and bypassed the "low-oil level" shutoff switch. It still has good spark, good compression and is getting plenty of fuel, but won't kick, even after spraying starting fluid directly into the carb.
It feels like it wants to start, but it just won't. Does anyone have any magic I might try? Thanks in advance. It has a displacement of 98cc's. The S. There's not much online about these engines, and Lifan wasn't very helpful.

LA -- Well I would like to see a lot of replies from those who have them. I'm looking for an atc70 motor, or may lean towards a Lifan but I just don't understand how a Chinese made motor is as good as a Honda. I mean it seems everyone agrees that the Chinese quads are junk, so why are these motors getting good reviews? Sam BatemanMay 5, Mini TrailMay 6, Great news about the incredible mileage you got from the I understand that the cc engine will fit my CL I actually considered that option rather than splitting the cases again to replace the kick start shaft but I worried about the reliability of the Chinese engine.
Why is the Lifan engine a pushrod design? Is that a copy of a particular Honda? Every Honda mini bike, motor bike, 3-wheeler etc has been OHC. It almost seems like a downgrade to the CL ADV Sponsors. Lifan actually makes both OHC and push rod s but the push rod engine is the most reliable and biggest seller.
Still the red line is somewhere above 8, RPM. The advantage is there is no cam chain and tensioner to adjust or fail.Bbc basic cpm
My lifan 1 down 3 up manual clutch is running strong and starts up easier then any honda motor i've had I took the engine apart to find out what was causing it to jump in 1st gear.
Found the shift drum stopper bolt had come loose witch is a pretty common problem on the horizontal Honda engines. Being the curious type I went ahead and split the case to check the gears, shifting forks, etc.
One thing I did find is a bit of wear on he center ridge of the cam chain guide wheel plastic that fits inside the cylinder casting. I'll replace it although it would probably work fine as is.
